A Mandate for ATSC 3.0 from International Momentum?

Updated: Sep 23

While the FCC seems unlikely to grant a government mandate, the recent announcement from Brazil and steady progress in India could create a different kind of mandate. Consider this chart of the top 15 countries by GDP with their path to next gen broadcast. These countries account for over 75% of the world's GDP. Currently only the US and South Korea are shown as ATSC 3.0 (yellow). But there are four countries (orange) Brazil, India, Canada and Mexico) that could join them. DVB versions (blue) are the most adopted standard, but with Japan (green) and China (purple) having their own standard, ATSC 3.0 countries could become a market too big to ignore. Also, consider the ATSC 3.0 current and potential countries include most of the fastest growing GDPs on the list. If this plays out in ATSC 3.0's favor it could become an international economic mandate.
